IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles by following eight different stages.
Initially, flour is first delivered by truck and stored in large storage silos. After that, flour is then mixed with some liquid ingredients such as water and oil. In the third stage, the mixture is passed through rollers, which flatten it into dough sheets. Next, the sheets are then cut into dough strips.
In the fifth stage, these strips are shaped into rounded noodle discs. Subsequently, noodle discs are mixed with cooking oil, and then processed for drying. In the next stage, vegetables and spices are added and stored into cups. In the final stage, cups are labeled and sealed and the final product is ready.
Overall, the process transforms raw flour into packaged noodle cups through a sequence of mixing, shaping, cooking, and packaging stages, using mechanical rollers and cutters at the early stages and manual/automated packing at the end.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process. You have covered the sequence from the delivery of flour to the final packaging. The overview provides a good summary of the transformation process. However, to reach a higher band, you could improve the 'reporting' aspect by making more explicit comparisons or highlighting key features, such as the transition from raw materials to the final product. The description is accurate and follows the diagram logically, ensuring all parts of the task are addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'After that', 'In the third stage', and 'Subsequently' to guide the reader through the process. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the body of the process, and the summary. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the different stages is easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including terms like 'manufacturing process', 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', and 'automated'. The word choice is generally precise and appropriate for a technical description. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'the mixture is passed through rollers, which flatten it into dough sheets'. The passive voice is used appropriately throughout, which is essential for describing a manufacturing process. There are very few grammatical errors, and the punctuation is accurate. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing a good level of control over complex structures.
