IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The provided process diagram details eight sequential stages involved in the manufacturing of instant cup noodles, starting from raw ingredient storage and culminating in the final packaged product.

Overall, the process is linear and fully automated, consisting of two main phases: dough preparation and shaping, followed by heat treatment and packaging.

In the initial stage, flour delivered by truck is stored in large silos. It is then transferred to a mixer where water and oil are added. This mixture passes through rollers to produce flat dough sheets, which are subsequently cut into thin dough strips. These strips are then shaped into circular noodle discs.

During the second phase, the noodle discs are fried in cooking oil and dried. Once cooked, the dried noodle discs are put into individual cups. Vegetables and spices are added on top before the cups move to the final stage, where labels are affixed and the containers are sealed, making them ready for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the manufacturing process and provided a clear, logical summary. The response covers all stages of the process, from raw ingredients to the final packaged product, and effectively divides the process into two distinct phases. The overview is concise and accurately captures the nature of the process. To reach a higher band, you could aim to incorporate more specific comparative language or highlight the transformation of the product more explicitly, such as noting the change in state from raw flour to a finished noodle disc.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the two main phases of production. Cohesive devices such as 'In the initial stage,' 'subsequently,' 'During the second phase,' and 'Once cooked' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the sequence of events. The flow is natural and logical, making the text easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which demonstrates a good command of textual cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process accurately. Terms such as 'sequential stages,' 'culminating,' 'fully automated,' and 'affixed' are used correctly and demonstrate a good level of precision. The vocabulary is appropriate for a technical process description. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied verbs to describe the mechanical actions, such as 'conveyed' instead of 'transferred' or 'integrated' instead of 'added'. Overall, the lexical control is strong and supports the clarity of the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of complex sentence structures used throughout the response. You have effectively used passive voice constructions (e.g., 'flour... is stored,' 'strips are then shaped,' 'labels are affixed'), which is essential for describing a manufacturing process. There are no significant grammatical errors, and punctuation is used correctly. The sentences are well-constructed and demonstrate a high level of control over complex grammatical forms, contributing to the overall professional tone of the writing.
