IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram illustrates how a company produced an instant noodles, including eight stages from storage silos to labelling and packing.

Overall, it is clear that the process consists of several stages, beginning with storing flour in silos and ending with the process of labelling and sealing. Several steps are involved in transforming the initial materials into the finished product.

At the very beginning, trucks reached to silos for storing the flour. Following this, flour passed on to the next stage where that will go through in a mixture with water and oil, after that with the help of rollers the mixed substance reached to dough sheets. In the next stage, dough strips splice those sheets into thin lines to give shape like noodle.

At the next stage, those strips goes through a process where they assembled as noodle discs. Following this, those discs went through Oven in which cooking oil sprinkle in small quantity for better texture and than drying it, after that with the use of conveyor belt where cups were filled with vegetables and species, those discs put in them. Finally, last stages where company labelled and sealed them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from storage to final packaging. The overview is clear, and the main features are identified. However, the description of the process is somewhat mechanical and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the stages. While the key steps are mentioned, the response could be improved by grouping the stages more effectively (e.g., preparation, processing, and packaging) to show a deeper understanding of the flow. The inclusion of specific details like 'vegetables and species' (spices) is good, but the overall development is slightly basic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, moving chronologically through the stages. Paragraphing is used, though the second paragraph is quite long and could have been split for better readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Following this', 'At the next stage', and 'Finally' are used, but they are somewhat repetitive and mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel forced. The flow of information is consistent, but the lack of varied cohesive structures prevents a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using process-specific terms like 'silos', 'dough sheets', 'conveyor belt', and 'labelled'. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'splice those sheets into thin lines' (instead of 'cut' or 'slice') and 'species' (likely meaning 'spices'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic verbs like 'reached', 'passed', and 'put'. To improve, the student should aim for more precise technical verbs and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'trucks reached to silos' (incorrect preposition), 'those strips goes' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'cooking oil sprinkle' (passive voice needed). Additionally, the phrasing 'where that will go through in a mixture' is awkward and grammatically incorrect. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and precision of the writing.
