IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of instant noodles production in a factory. In general, there are eight stages of manufacturing before the final products are delivered for sell.
Overall, it can be observed that the production of instant noodles start from collecting the flour in a silos storage to labelling up the noodles packet.
The first operation consists of putting flour into the silos storage and mixing it with some water and oil in a mixture. After that, when it becomes smooth, it is rolled in rollers to make dough sheets. Following this, the sheets are cut into a thin dough strips which is again shaped in round form.
Subsequently, it is cooked in cooking oil and leave it until it is dried. Once the noodles become dry, some vegetables and spices are added in it. Then, the cups are sent to seal and level the stickers of the companies’ name and product details. Finally, the product is ready for sell.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all stages of the process, from the initial storage of flour to the final labelling. The overview is clear and identifies the main stages effectively. However, the report could be improved by highlighting the transition between the mechanical processing stages and the final packaging more explicitly. While the main features are reported, the description of the process is somewhat linear and lacks a more analytical approach to the comparison of stages. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task well, providing a clear summary of the manufacturing cycle.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'The first operation', 'After that', 'Following this', and 'Subsequently' are used effectively to guide the reader through the stages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed description. The progression of ideas is clear, and the use of referencing is generally accurate, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the sequence of events in the noodle production process.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'silos storage', and 'dough sheets'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'delivered for sell' (should be 'sale') and 'level the stickers' (should be 'label'). While the range is sufficient to convey the process clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise terminology that would elevate the response to a higher band. The use of 'mixture' to refer to the machine is also slightly imprecise, as 'mixer' would be more accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'production of instant noodles start' (subject-verb agreement) and 'leave it until it is dried' (tense inconsistency). Additionally, 'which is again shaped in round form' contains a minor article error. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally correct. The range of structures is adequate for the task, but more consistent control over verb forms and articles would improve the accuracy of the writing.
