IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Manufacturing instant noodles goes through many steps to be turned into the instant noodles we all see and love in supermarkets. Today we will talk about those steps.

At first flour , which is what noodles are made of , is stored in storage silos. Later, by the use of trucks the flour is transferred to mixer where flour, water and oil are all mixed together to turn into dough. That dough is turned into dough sheets with the help of rollers.

Once the dough has been made, this is where the noodles come into shape of strings. The dough sheets go through different machines. These machines cut the dough sheets into this dough strips and turn them into discs, which is later drowned in cooking oil and dried right after. The noodle has been made. Once they are ready, the discs are put into noodle cups and labeled right after adding of spices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process, from storage to packaging. However, it lacks a clear overview or summary of the process, which is essential for a Band 6 or higher. The introduction is informal and does not provide a concise summary of the overall procedure. While the key steps are identified, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks the analytical comparison required for a high score. To improve, ensure you include an introductory overview that highlights the main stages of the process and use more precise language to describe the transformation of the raw materials.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into three short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. The use of cohesive devices like 'At first', 'Later', and 'Once' provides a basic logical progression. However, the transitions between sentences can feel a bit repetitive and mechanical. The paragraphing is acceptable, but the overall structure could be improved by grouping the stages more logically—for example, separating the preparation phase from the cooking and packaging phase. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between ideas could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'turned into' and 'made of' are repeated, which limits the range. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'drowned in cooking oil' (a more appropriate term would be 'immersed' or 'deep-fried'). The response lacks the technical vocabulary needed to describe a manufacturing process effectively. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise verbs and nouns related to industrial processes, such as 'processed', 'extruded', or 'automated'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentences, but there are frequent errors in punctuation and article usage. For example, 'flour , which is what...' contains unnecessary spaces before commas, and 'into this dough strips' is grammatically incorrect. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article omission, such as 'transferred to mixer' instead of 'transferred to a mixer'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for articles and prepositions would be beneficial.
