IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram depicts the step-by-step manufacturing process of instant noodles.

It is clear that the manufacturing process of instant noodles from flour consists of 8 different stages and a number of different tools and infrastructures, from storing flour into the storage silos to labelling and sealing of the final products.

At the first stage of the process, flour is stored in the storage silos. After that, flour is taken in a mixer where water and oil are added and after mixing the flour dough comes out as thin sheets. In the fourth stage, the sheets will pass through a machine where the sheets are cut into fine strips. Next, the strips pass through another machine where they are shaped into noodles discs

In the following stage, there are stoves where the discs are fried with cooking oil and dried for further packaging. Then, the noodles discs are put in the cups and added vegetables and spices. After that, these cups pass through a tool where labelling and sealing is done. Finally, the instant noodles are ready for marketing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process clearly. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the transition from raw flour to the final packaged product. However, the response lacks a clear overview or summary of the process as a whole, which is a key requirement for Band 7+. While you mention there are 8 stages, you do not highlight the most significant aspects, such as the transformation from raw ingredients to a finished, shelf-ready product. To improve, ensure you provide a concise summary paragraph that synthesizes the information rather than just listing the steps chronologically.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the diagram. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'At the first stage', 'After that', 'Next', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the process. While the paragraphing is functional, the transition between the description of the machinery and the actual process could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive; try to vary your linking phrases to improve the flow and demonstrate a higher level of control over the structure of your report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing process', 'storage silos', and 'packaging'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies heavily on the words provided in the prompt. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'noodles discs' (should be 'noodle discs') and 'a tool where labelling and sealing is done' (a 'machine' or 'automated system' would be more precise). To reach a higher band, incorporate more precise technical vocabulary and avoid repeating the same sentence structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'flour is taken in a mixer' (should be 'into a mixer') and 'added vegetables and spices' (should be 'vegetables and spices are added'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing industrial processes.
