IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles. Overall, it is a linear process consisting of eight stages, beginning with the storage of flour and ending with the labelling and sealing of the finished cups.
Initially, flour is delivered and stored in large storage silos. It is then transferred to a mixer, where water and oil are added to produce dough. The dough passes through a series of rollers that flatten it into thin sheets. These sheets are subsequently cut into narrow strips before being shaped into circular noodle discs.
In the next stage, the noodle discs are cooked in oil and then dried to remove excess moisture. After the drying process, the noodles are placed into individual cups. At this point, measured quantities of vegetables and spices are added to each cup to enhance the flavor.
Finally, the filled cups are sealed with lids and labelled, making them ready for distribution and sale. Overall, the production process transforms simple raw materials, such as flour, water and oil, into packaged instant noodles through a sequence of mixing, shaping, cooking, drying and packaging stages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively covers all stages of the manufacturing process. You have successfully identified the main features, starting from the raw material input to the final packaging. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the linear nature of the process. You have also included relevant details such as the addition of water, oil, and spices, which demonstrates a thorough understanding of the diagram. The information is well-selected and reported accurately, meeting all the requirements of the task. No significant omissions were noted, and the progression of the process is logical and easy to follow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression from the beginning to the end of the process. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Initially', 'It is then', 'subsequently', 'In the next stage', and 'Finally'. These transitions help the reader navigate the sequence of events smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction and overview from the detailed body stages. The relationship between ideas is clear throughout, and the use of referencing is precise, ensuring that the flow of information remains consistent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process accurately. Terms such as 'storage silos', 'flatten', 'narrow strips', 'moisture', and 'distribution' are used correctly and in the right context. The language is natural and precise, which helps in conveying the technical nature of the process clearly. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations related to industrial manufacturing could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical control is strong and there are no errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have used a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as passive voice constructions ('flour is delivered', 'are added', 'are placed'), which is highly appropriate for describing a process. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no noticeable errors in tense or subject-verb agreement. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over complex structures is consistent. The writing is fluent and professional, reflecting a strong command of English grammar.
