IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of instant noodles production.

Overall, the manufacturing process consists of eight different stages, beginning with the stage of storing flour in silos and ending with the product's labelling and sealing.

First of all, flour is stored in silos by goods trucks. After that, the flour is placed into a mixer along with water and oil, where it is turned into dough. Then it is transferred onto rollers to convert into plain dough sheets. Next, the sheets are passed through a cutting machine to turn into long dough strips.

In the next stage, the strips are processed in a machine and shaped into noodle discs. Following this, discs go into a cooking oil frying stage along with a drying phase. After that, the dry discs are transferred into cups with the addition of vegetables and spices. Finally, the last manufacturing process undergo labelling and sealing stage; ultimately, it is ready to be supplied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the chronological sequence of the diagram. However, to reach a higher band, you should aim to make more explicit comparisons or highlight key features, such as the transition from raw materials to the final packaged product. The description is accurate, but it remains a fairly literal step-by-step account. Including a more analytical summary of the transformation process would strengthen the response. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'After that', 'Next', and 'Following this' helps guide the reader through the process effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the initial preparation stages from the final processing and packaging stages. The flow of information is smooth and easy to follow. To improve further, you could vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a repetitive 'Then/After that' structure, but the current usage is effective and clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, such as 'manufacturing', 'silos', 'dough', and 'labelling'. The terminology is accurate and appropriate for the context of a process description. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more precise verbs or descriptive phrases to describe the mechanical actions, such as 'extruded' instead of 'turned into' or 'automated' to describe the machinery. The current vocabulary is adequate and functional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'the last manufacturing process undergo labelling', which should be 'undergoes', and 'to convert into plain dough sheets', which would be better as 'to be converted into'. Despite these occasional slips, the meaning is never obscured. You have shown good control over punctuation and sentence construction, which makes the text easy to read.
