IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the procedure of instant noodles production from flour, water and oil into labeled and sealed cups for selling.

Overall, the manufacturing of instant noodle involves eight major steps of chemical and industrial processes: storage, mixing, sheets, strips, discs, cooking, drying, cups and labels.

Instant noodles manufacturing start off from flour stored in storage silos which is used in the second step by transferring it to the mixer with the ingredients water and oil. The mixer converts the flour, water and oil into dough which goes through the rollers to produce dough sheets for the fourth step. The unique shape of noodles is given it to by passing the dough sheets through a cutter making dough strips.

Furthermore, noodles discs are made by wrapping the strips in a certain order which leads to the sixth step of cooking the discs with oil and then drying them. Noodles are prepared and ready to be places in cups with the addition of vegetables and spices for taste. Last step consists of labeling the cups with correct labels and sealing them shut so noodles do not rot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from raw materials to the final product. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview of the process. The information is logically sequenced, and you have included all key steps such as mixing, rolling, cutting, cooking, and packaging. To reach a higher band, ensure that you avoid minor inaccuracies in description; for example, you mention 'chemical' processes, which is not explicitly supported by the diagram. Additionally, ensure that the distinction between the stages is precise, as some steps like 'discs' and 'strips' are presented as distinct stages when they are actually part of the continuous transformation of the dough.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Last step', and 'which leads to' to guide the reader through the stages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed description. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between the dough preparation and the final packaging is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'procedure', 'ingredients', and 'silos'. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly imprecise or awkward, such as 'so noodles do not rot' (a more formal alternative would be 'to ensure preservation' or 'to maintain freshness'). There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the process clearly. To improve, try to incorporate more precise technical collocations related to industrial processes, such as 'automated', 'conveyor belt', or 'processed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Instant noodles manufacturing start off' (should be 'starts off') and 'ready to be places' (should be 'ready to be placed'). Additionally, 'The unique shape of noodles is given it to by passing' is syntactically awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of subject-verb agreement and passive voice constructions. Increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using more relative clauses or participial phrases, would help demonstrate greater control over grammar.
