IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles.
Overall, the process involves eight stages, beginning with the storage of flour in large silos and ending with the labelling and sealing of cups. A complex stage of the entire process is the cooking and drying of the noodle discs.
Initially, flour is transported by a van and subsequently stored in large silos. It is then transferred to the mixer, where water and oil are added. After, the mixture is passed through the rollers, where dough sheets are formed. In the next stage, these dough sheets are cut into strips by machines. Next, these dough strips are molded into the shape of discs.
In the subsequent stage, the noodles discs are cooked and dried with oil. Then, these discs are transferred into cups, where we can top up the noodle's discs with vegetables and spices. Then these cups are labelled with appropriate labels and sealed carefully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the initial storage of flour to the final sealing of the cups. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview of the process. The information is logically sequenced, and you have included relevant details such as the addition of water and oil, the formation of dough sheets, and the final packaging steps. To reach a higher band, ensure that you make more explicit comparisons or highlight the transformation between stages more clearly, as the current description is primarily a sequential list of steps.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is well-organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'subsequently', 'In the next stage', and 'In the subsequent stage' to guide the reader through the process. The paragraphing is appropriate, separating the preparation of the dough from the final packaging stages. The flow of information is logical and easy to follow, and the referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including terms like 'manufacturing process', 'silos', 'dough sheets', and 'molded'. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for a technical description. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'transferred' and 'stored'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'conveyed', 'processed', or 'automated', to demonstrate a more sophisticated lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures, with a mix of simple and complex sentences. You have used the passive voice effectively, which is appropriate for describing a manufacturing process (e.g., 'flour is transported', 'dough sheets are formed'). There are very few grammatical errors, and punctuation is generally accurate. The sentences are clear and easy to read. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with more varied sentence structures, such as using participle clauses to combine steps, which would enhance the flow and complexity of your writing.
