IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram demonstrates that how instant noodles are made.
Overall, the figure illustrates different steps of manufacturing noodles which involves eight stages. Initially it starts from mixing of flour with some liquid, that is water and oil and ends at labelling and sealing of the cups.
The first step indicates a truck of flour which is released in the storage silos. In the next step, the flour that is stored is further mixed with water and oil by a mixer. After mixing it together, a dough is formed which is then converted into dough sheets by rollers. Moreover, dough strips are formed after the production of dough sheets. In the fifth step, round shaped noodle discs are made.
Sixth step includes cooking the noodles with some oil and dry them. Furthermore, vegetables and spices are added with the dried noodles in cups with same quantity. The last step consists of labelling and sealing the cups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the initial storage of flour to the final sealing of the cups. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview of the eight-stage process. However, the report lacks a more analytical approach; for instance, you could have grouped the stages more effectively (e.g., preparation, processing, and packaging) to improve the logical flow. While the key information is present, the description is somewhat mechanical and could benefit from more precise comparisons or descriptions of the machinery involved to fully meet the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'In the next step', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit repetitive, and the use of cohesive devices is occasionally mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the stages more fluidly rather than simply listing them step-by-step.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufacturing', 'silos', 'dough sheets', and 'noodle discs' used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on basic descriptors. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'released in the storage silos' (which should be 'stored in' or 'delivered to') and 'with same quantity' (which is grammatically awkward). To improve, try to incorporate more precise verbs and nouns related to industrial processes to demonstrate a more flexible range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The diagram demonstrates that how instant noodles are made' (the 'that' is redundant) and 'cooking the noodles with some oil and dry them' (inconsistent verb tense). Additionally, 'flour which is released' is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage throughout the process description will help improve your accuracy.
