The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the production process of instant noodles from the storage of flour in silos to labeling and sealing the noodles cups for retailing.
Overall, manufacturing of instant noodles consists of seven steps that take place with the help of industrial machines from storing, mixing, preparing sheet and strips with their conversion into discs, cooking, drying, labeling and sealing of cups.
Initially, flour is supplied to storage silos in trucks as large amounts of flour is required for instant noodles. In the next step, flour is mixed and kneaded with water and oil to produce the required dough. Thereafter, dough sheets are formed by passing through rollers. Consequently, dough sheets are converted to dough strips by cutting the dough sheets.
Furthermore, noodles are given their shape by making them into disc form in the fifth step. Ultimately, discs formed in previous step are cooked in oil and dryed for the final production step. Finally, cups consists of noodles with addition of vegetable and spices in seventh step. In the last step, labeling and sealing of the cups is done for retailing process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the initial storage of flour to the final packaging. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview in the second paragraph. The information is logically sequenced, following the flow of the diagram accurately. To reach a higher band, ensure that the description of the final steps is as detailed as the earlier ones; for instance, the addition of vegetables and spices is mentioned briefly, but could be integrated more smoothly into the narrative of the production line. Overall, the task is addressed well with a clear focus on the process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is well-organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. You make good use of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'In the next step', 'Thereafter', 'Consequently', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through the stages. The progression is clear and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different phases of production. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be slightly more varied to avoid a mechanical feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a technical process, using terms like 'silos', 'kneaded', 'dough sheets', and 'retailing'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'dryed' (should be 'dried') and 'cups consists' (should be 'cups consist'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or 'less common' items that would elevate the score to a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and ensuring correct spelling will help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, though a few errors persist. For example, 'as large amounts of flour is required' should be 'are required' (subject-verb agreement), and 'cups consists' should be 'cups consist'. Additionally, 'preparing sheet and strips' would be better phrased as 'preparing sheets and strips'. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the sentence structures are varied enough to maintain a good flow throughout the description.
