IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the industrial process of producing instant noodles.

Overall, this process consists of eight distnict steps, starting off by filling a storage silos with flour from a trunk, ending with manufacturing the final product by adding the final touch in labeling and sealing.

Initially, flour which is carried by a trunk is delivered to the factory, it is then put in a storage silos. Later, that flour is combined with water and oil in a mixer, this results in producing dough. In the following stage, the dough goes through rollers in order to make them thin as sheets. The dough sheets are subsequently cut into strips by a cutting machine.

In the fifth stage of this production, those dough strips are put together, making noodles discs which are cooked in oil in the next step. Once the noodles are cooked, it undergoes drying process. Vegetables and other spices are put over the dried noodles in each cups. Finally, the cups are sealed and labelled making them ready for sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all stages of the noodle manufacturing process. You have identified the main features, such as the initial delivery, mixing, rolling, cutting, cooking, drying, and final packaging. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the eight steps involved. To reach a higher band, ensure you avoid minor inaccuracies in the description of the process; for example, you mention 'each cups' which is slightly imprecise as the diagram shows the noodles being placed into individual cups. Overall, the information is well-selected and the process is easy to follow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. You use cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'In the following stage', 'subsequently', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the steps. However, some transitions are slightly repetitive or mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text. To improve, try to vary the sentence starters further to enhance the flow between the stages of the process.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'industrial process', 'manufacturing', 'dough', and 'storage silos'. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'distnict' (spelling), 'trunk' (likely meant 'truck'), and 'each cups' (pluralization error). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise technical collocations related to manufacturing processes would strengthen your lexical profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'filling a storage silos' (incorrect article/plural agreement), 'flour which is carried by a trunk is delivered... it is then put' (comma splice), and 'it undergoes' (subject-verb agreement error, as 'noodles' is plural). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding comma splices by using appropriate conjunctions or semicolons to join independent clauses.
