IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of how instant noodles are created using different machinery.
It is evident that the whole method consists of eight steps. Moreover, the manufacturing starts with filling flour into storage silos and ends with the labeling and sealing of noodles.
Firstly, the large storage silos are filled completely with the raw material flour and in then the flour is mixed in a mixer by adding water and oil into it. Secondly, then dough sheets are formed on rollers which are constantly moving. Moreover, in the next step dough sheets pass through a machine which converts it into dough strips.
Additionally, the machine next to it makes noodles discs using dough strips and then are thrown into cooking oil where they are perfectly cooked and dried as well. After that they are packed in cups where appropriate vegetables and spices are added for flavor. And in the next step those cups are labeled and sealed for sending to the different companies

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the storage of flour to the final labeling. The overview is clear, identifying the eight-step nature of the process. However, the report lacks a clear distinction between the main features and supporting details. While the sequence is followed, the description of the final stages is slightly rushed, and the connection between the 'cooking' and 'drying' phases could be more precise based on the diagram. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task well, though it could benefit from a more analytical approach to the process flow rather than just listing the steps sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized logically, following the chronological order of the manufacturing process. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'Additionally' helps guide the reader through the stages. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the report is contained within one large paragraph, which hinders the visual clarity of the information. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'And in the next step' and 'Moreover'. Improving the variety of linking phrases and breaking the text into logical paragraphs would enhance the flow significantly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufacturing', 'raw material', and 'storage silos' used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'noodles discs' (should be 'noodle discs') and 'perfectly cooked'. The student relies on basic verbs like 'makes' and 'converted'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'processed', 'extruded', or 'automated', and ensure better control over collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in then the flour is mixed' (redundant 'in'), 'converts it into' (the pronoun 'it' lacks a clear antecedent, as 'dough sheets' is plural), and 'for sending to the different companies' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining the use of relative clauses would improve the grammatical control.
