IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the step-by-step process of manufacturing instant noodles.

Overall, the making of noodles begins with mixing flour from storage silos with water and oil in a mixer and ends with the labelling of cups to be ready for distribution. It mainly consists of the manufacturing and packaging process of the noodles. The whole process consists of eight stages.

.

In the manufacturing phase, first, the process begins with the blending of flour from silos, water, and oil in a mixer, which is then converted into dough sheets. Next, these are then transformed into dough strips with the help of rollers. Then, the dough strips are then shaped into noodle discs. After this, at the end of this stage, cooking oil is used to cook them and then dry them to move the noodles to the packaging procedure.

The packaging part starts with putting the required amount of noodles in the cups, then vegetables and spices are added. Finally, cups are labelled, and then they are sealed so that they are ready for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process and provided a clear overview. You covered the transition from raw materials to the final packaged product. However, the response lacks a degree of analytical depth. For instance, you mention 'cooking oil' is used to cook and dry the noodles, but you could have more clearly distinguished between the 'steaming' and 'frying' phases shown in the diagram. Additionally, while you mention the eight stages, highlighting the specific transition points (e.g., the shift from the manufacturing line to the packaging line) would have strengthened the report. Overall, the response is accurate and covers all key features of the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that follow the process chronologically. You use cohesive devices such as 'first', 'next', 'then', and 'finally' to guide the reader through the stages. However, the use of 'then' is slightly repetitive throughout the second paragraph, which makes the flow feel a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and use more sophisticated referencing (e.g., 'once this stage is complete', 'subsequently', or 'following this'). Paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the process, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'distribution', 'blending', and 'packaging'. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the task. To improve, you could incorporate more precise technical collocations related to industrial processes, such as 'conveyor belt', 'automated', or 'processed'. While your word choice is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and sophistication required for a higher band score. Avoid repeating simple verbs like 'transformed' or 'shaped' by using more descriptive alternatives where possible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor issues with sentence construction, such as the repetitive use of 'these are then transformed' and 'the dough strips are then shaped'. While these do not impede communication, they limit the grammatical variety. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and there are no major errors that cause confusion. To improve, try to combine sentences using relative clauses or participial phrases to create a more fluid, academic tone.
