IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram demonstrates how instant noodles are manufactured after passing through different stages.
Overall, the manufacturing of noodles consist almost eight steps, starting from storage silos and then after passing through other stages it ends after adding vegetables and spices.
In detail, the process of manufacturing starts from flour and storage silos and then it move to mixer. After adding water and oil it has moved to dough sheets by passing via rollers. The next step is to pass flour through dough strips and then it has placed on noodles discs. Furthermore, the next stage is to add cooking oil plus drying. Then it is put into the cups and also to add vegetables plus spices. The last step is labelling and sealing to the market this is the last step to implement to complete the whole process. The instant noodles are produced by passing through various stages and whole process is fully machine dependent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the manufacturing process, from raw materials to the final product. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview of the process flow. While you mention the process is 'machine dependent,' you could improve by highlighting the key transformation phases (e.g., preparation, processing, and packaging). Some steps are described in a repetitive, list-like manner rather than synthesizing the information. To reach a higher band, ensure that the comparison of stages is more fluid and that the overview clearly captures the essence of the entire production cycle rather than just stating the number of steps.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. While there is a logical progression, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical. Phrases like 'The next step is' and 'Furthermore, the next stage is' are used frequently, which makes the flow feel a bit stilted. Paragraphing is present, but the body paragraph is quite dense; splitting the process into two distinct stages (e.g., preparation vs. packaging) would improve the readability and logical structure. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between sentences could be more varied to enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You use functional words like 'manufacturing,' 'stages,' and 'process' correctly, but there is a lack of more precise, topic-specific vocabulary (e.g., 'extrusion,' 'conveyor belt,' 'automated,' or 'packaging'). There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'labelling and sealing to the market,' which is not standard phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive verbs and nouns related to industrial processes to demonstrate a wider range of lexical items. The current range is sufficient to convey the meaning but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'manufacturing of noodles consist' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'it has moved to dough sheets' (incorrect tense usage). There are also issues with prepositions and word order, such as 'sealing to the market this is the last step to implement to complete.' While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing a process, and aim for more varied sentence structures.
