IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the steps involved in manufacturing instant noodles, from storage silos to its labelling and sealing.
Overall, this process comprises eight stages, beginning with collecting flour from storage and culminating in adding labels on cups. This procedure is linear, with several stages involving manipulating the dough, cooking it in oil and addition of vegetable and spices essential for the taste.
Initially, flour is collected from storage silos and transferred into a mixer, there the flour is mixed properly with water and oil. Once the dough is prepared, it passed through rollers, and the resulting dough sheets are cut into strips.
Following this, the strips have been converted into noodle discs. The discs are subsequently fried in oil and dried before being stored in cups consisting vegetables and spices. Finally, the cups consisting fried noodles, vegetable and spices are labelled and sealed properly, bringing the process to an end.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the initial flour storage to the final labelling and sealing. The overview provides a clear summary of the process, noting its linear nature and the key components involved. The main features are highlighted, and the sequence is logically followed. The response is accurate and addresses the requirements of the task well. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more specific details about the physical changes at each stage, such as the transition from dough sheets to strips, to further demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Once', 'Following this', and 'Finally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the stages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the preparation of the dough from the final processing and packaging. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for a process description, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'culminating', 'linear', and 'manipulating'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'cups consisting vegetables', which should be 'cups containing vegetables' or 'cups with vegetables'. While the range is sufficient to convey the process clearly, it lacks a slightly higher level of sophistication or variety in collocations that would be expected at the highest bands. However, the vocabulary used is precise enough to ensure the meaning is never in doubt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'there the flour is mixed' (should be 'where the flour is mixed') and 'it passed through rollers' (should be 'it is passed through rollers'). Additionally, 'the strips have been converted' is slightly awkward in tense for a general process description; the present simple passive is more suitable. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The control of grammar is sufficient for a solid band 6.5.
