IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This chart illustrates the production process of instant noodles and describes the stages involved in the manufacturing. This essay will discuss each phases that are relevant in manufacturing instant noodles.
Overall, It is evident that the instant noodle business is a massive hit in a country. It also involves several stages which begin with storing the flour in massive silos and then after going through a bunch of adding and mixing, the noodles are finally sent out for consumption.
The first and foremost step in the production of these noodles is storage. Huge silos are filled with flour, which is delivered by massive trucks. The next stage is mixing, where this raw flour is mixed with water and oil. Once meticulously mixed, this mix is converted into the dough sheets through rollers. As a result, dough strips are disbursed.
Meanwhile, these strips are then molded into sleek noodle discs, which are then sent for cooking in refined oil. Moreover, once these discs are cooked they are set aside for drying. Consequently, after drying these disks are contained in a cup along with vegetables and spices. Furthermore, the labelling is done by the employees who seal the finished products at the end.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the process, from storage to packaging. However, the overview is slightly off-topic; mentioning that the business is a 'massive hit in a country' is an external opinion not supported by the diagram. The task requires a summary of the manufacturing process, not a market analysis. While the sequence is clear, the description of the final stages lacks detail regarding the specific components (vegetables and spices) being added, which are key features of the diagram. To improve, focus strictly on the visual information provided and ensure the overview highlights the main trends or stages of the process rather than subjective commentary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, moving chronologically through the manufacturing stages. Cohesive devices such as 'The first and foremost step', 'Meanwhile', 'Consequently', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader through the process. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the connection between the 'dough sheets' and 'dough strips' could be more explicitly linked to the roller mechanism shown in the diagram. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'meticulously', 'disbursed', and 'manufacturing' used correctly. However, there are some informal or imprecise choices, such as 'a bunch of adding and mixing' and 'massive hit', which are not suitable for an academic report. The use of 'disbursed' is also slightly inaccurate in this context, as it usually refers to money or funds rather than physical dough strips. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes and maintain a formal, objective tone throughout the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'discuss each phases' (should be 'each phase') and 'It is evident that the instant noodle business is a massive hit in a country' (which is a stylistic error rather than purely grammatical). Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present do not impede communication. To improve, ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent and avoid informal phrasing. The use of passive voice, which is appropriate for process descriptions, is present but could be used more consistently to enhance the academic tone.
