IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The process diagram illustrates the way in which instant noodles are produced.
Overall, producing instant noodles is a sequential manufacturing process that consists of four main stages: mixing, cutting, shaping and cooking. It starts by shipping flour from silos and finishes with packing and labeling.
Initially, the flour is transported from trucks to a storage silo. From there, it is combined with water and oil to form a dough. The roller is used to flatten the dough into sheets using a roller machine. These sheets are sliced into smaller strips and molded into circular discs.
The next stage involves cooking the noodles through deep-frying in an oil, followed by drying.
The noodles are placed into the cups with some vegetables and spices. Finally, the cups are sealed and labeled, completing the process, and noodles are then ready to be distributed in the markets for sale, which is then later consumed by the consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the initial delivery of flour to the final distribution. You have provided a clear overview of the process and highlighted the key stages effectively. The information is accurate and reflects the provided diagram well. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly mention all minor details shown in the diagram, such as the specific duration of the drying process or the temperature of the oil, if provided. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt comprehensively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'From there', and 'The next stage' to guide the reader through the steps. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the stages of production. To improve further, try to vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a mechanical feel, and ensure that the transition between the final steps and the distribution phase is as smooth as the earlier stages.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a process description, such as 'sequential', 'manufacturing', 'transported', and 'molded'. The terminology is accurate and relevant to the topic. There are no significant errors in word choice. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms for common verbs (e.g., instead of 'combined', use 'blended' or 'amalgamated'). The current range is sufficient to convey the information clearly and precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures, including the use of the passive voice, which is essential for describing a process (e.g., 'flour is transported', 'noodles are placed'). The sentences are generally error-free and easy to follow. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. To reach a higher band, ensure that you maintain consistent control over complex sentence constructions and avoid minor stylistic redundancies, such as 'which is then later consumed by the consumers', which is slightly wordy.
