IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram depicts the information about the stages involved in production of noodles.
Overall, it is clear that it is man-made process and consists several stages, beginning with collection of the noodles flour and concluding with packaging of the noodle boxes.
The process begins when the flour is transported using the truck. After first step is completed, flour is stored in storage silos. Then, the raw materials move in mixer. Once this process is done, water and oil are mixed in flour. Next, the mixture transfer in roller. After words, the mixture contacts with dough sheets and dough strips.
During the next stage, cooking oils are added in the noddle disc, meanwhile the mixture is dried. At this point, the vegetable and spices are mixed in noodles and cups are collected noodles. Following this, labels put on the cup and the cups are sealed with the aluminum foil. After, the packed noodles are distributed in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process, from raw material delivery to final packaging. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview of the process flow. While the main features are identified, the explanation of how the stages connect is occasionally vague, such as the transition between the roller and the dough sheets. To improve, ensure that the relationship between the stages is more clearly articulated and that the summary highlights the transformation of the product more effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. Cohesive devices such as 'The process begins,' 'Then,' and 'Following this' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly awkward or unnatural, such as 'After words' (likely meant 'Afterwards') and 'After, the packed noodles.' The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would enhance the overall readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the stages of production. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'collection of the noodles flour' and 'noddle disc,' which appear to be minor slips or misspellings. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic terms. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise technical terminology related to manufacturing processes and ensure correct collocations, such as 'raw materials' or 'automated production line.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('move in mixer,' 'transfer in roller'), incorrect prepositions ('mixed in flour'), and awkward phrasing ('labels put on the cup'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the clarity of the text. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
