IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram depicts the steps involved in manufacturing of the instant noodles.
Overall, instant noodles are manufactured in eight steps, mostly comprises of machinery and a step to store the imported flour. The process illustrates how dough is transformed into noodles and how other ingredients are packed in the container.
First step is to store the flour in storage silos, which is directly imported via trucks filled with flour. Using mixer, dough sheet is formed using water, oil and flour which is stored in silos. Then the sheets are moved forward using the rollers into the machine, which transforms it to dough strips. Furthermore, the dough strips are moved forward to the noodle discs machine.
Noodle discs are converted from dough strips, which is cooked in oil make it edible and noodle discs are dried before adding it into the cups. The next step involves adding vegetables and spices in the cups with noodle discs. Thereafter, the instant noodles are ready to be sealed and labeled, which is the eighth step, and it is the final step of the manufacturing of the instant noddles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the storage of raw materials to the final sealing and labeling. The overview is clear, identifying the eight-step nature of the process. However, the description of the process is somewhat repetitive and lacks a more analytical approach to the 'main features.' While the sequence is accurate, the report would benefit from grouping stages more effectively to highlight the transformation of the product rather than simply listing steps. The inclusion of all key stages ensures the task is addressed, but the development of the information is slightly mechanical.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'First step,' 'Furthermore,' 'Then,' and 'Thereafter' are used to guide the reader through the process. However, some transitions feel a bit repetitive or mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the raw material stage to the finished product. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases to avoid a list-like structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufacturing,' 'storage silos,' 'dough strips,' and 'noodle discs' used correctly. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'noddles' instead of 'noodles.' The range of vocabulary is sufficient to describe the process, but it lacks the sophistication or precision that would elevate it to a higher band. The repetition of basic verbs like 'moved' and 'adding' limits the lexical variety. To improve, you should incorporate more precise verbs related to industrial processes, such as 'conveyed,' 'processed,' or 'integrated.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'mostly comprises of' (should be 'mostly comprises' or 'is mostly comprised of') and 'noodle discs are converted from dough strips, which is cooked' (subject-verb agreement error: 'which are cooked'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence construction will improve your accuracy.
