IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
the diagram shows the process of making instant noodles.
Overall, there are several stages in this process. Such as, mixing, making dough sheets, cutting, cooking and adding vegetables and spices.
Looking at the chart in detail, the flour is stored in large storage. It is put into a mixer whare water and oil are added. After mixing the dough is prepared and passed through rollers are then cut into long strips.
Next, the noodles strips are shaped into round noodles discs. these discs are cooked in oil and then dried. After that, the dried noodles are placed into cups. In the last stage, the cups are sealed and the instant noodles are ready and also ready for import in other places.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to summarise the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process, touching upon flour storage, mixing, rolling, cutting, shaping, cooking, drying, and packaging. However, the response falls significantly short of the required 150-word minimum, containing only 121 words. This under-length impacts the overall fullness of the response, leading to a penalty under Task Achievement. While key stages such as mixing water and oil with flour and sealing the final product are mentioned, some details are underdeveloped, and a more comprehensive comparison or overview of the entire linear process is missing. Consequently, the response sits at Band 5.0 due to the length deficiency and limited development of some features.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text demonstrates a basic overall structure, beginning with an introductory sentence and attempting a brief overview ('Overall, there are several stages...'). Cohesive devices such as 'Looking at the chart in detail', 'Next', and 'After that' are used to guide the reader through the sequential steps of the diagram. However, paragraphing is weak; the essay is compressed into an intro-like sentence followed by two poorly grouped blocks of text, with the second paragraph starting abruptly with sentence fragments ('Such as, mixing...'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'passed through rollers are then cut into long strips', where the subject of the passive verb is muddled. These issues reflect a coherent overall arrangement but with faulty and mechanical cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a simple manufacturing process, including terms like 'storage', 'mixer', 'dough', 'rollers', 'strips', 'discs', and 'sealed'. However, there are notable word-choice and spelling errors that impede natural expression, such as spelling 'warehouse' or 'where' as 'whare', and referring to 'noodles strips' instead of 'noodle strips'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success ('for import in other places' instead of 'export' or 'distribution'). Because the vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task but contains noticeable errors, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive structures ('is stored', 'are added', 'are cooked') which are necessary for process descriptions. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are major structural flaws and punctuation errors, such as sentence fragments ('Such as, mixing, making dough sheets, cutting, cooking and adding vegetables and spices.') and missing subjects or clumsy phrasing ('passed through rollers are then cut'). Frequent errors in punctuation (e.g., lowercase beginnings of sentences like 'these discs...') and awkward syntactic linkages reduce clarity. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing this criterion at Band 5.0.
