Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover all the main steps in the process of manufacturing instant noodles, starting from storing flour in silos to packing the final product in cups with spices and vegetables. However, the summary lacks a clear overview and fails to effectively highlight the key stages or make meaningful comparisons where relevant. Several details are vague or slightly inaccurate based on standard diagram conventions, such as the transition from dough sheets to strips and discs. The development is somewhat restricted by repetitive phrasing and a lack of data synthesis. Consequently, this performance aligns closely with Band 5, as it addresses the task only partially and presents ideas in a somewhat limited fashion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay uses basic transition phrases like 'Starting with the first step' and 'Move on to the second step' to sequence information, but the overall organization lacks a cohesive flow and proper paragraphing. The entire response is essentially one long block of text with arbitrary line breaks, which hampers readability. Referencing is frequently unclear, with words like 'that' and 'this' overused without precise antecedents (e.g., 'that flour is poured in mixer... After this, that dough pass'). Paragraphing is not used sufficiently or appropriately to group logical stages of the manufacturing process. These issues reflect the characteristics of a Band 5 score for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and repetitive, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text. Examples include 'silots' instead of silos, 'manufecturing' instead of manufacturing, 'roollers' instead of rollers, 'machinary' instead of machinery, 'lebelings' instead of labelings, and 'manufured' instead of manufactured. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary and struggles with accurate collocations and derivations. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic of making instant noodles, the noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader and firmly place this response in the Band 5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying mostly on faulty complex or run-on sentences connected by commas and relative pronouns. There are frequent, persistent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'This diagram illustrate' instead of illustrates, 'flour are loaded' instead of is loaded, 'that dough pass' instead of passes, and 'cooking it into the oil' instead of cooking it in oil. Punctuation is weak, lacking proper sentence boundaries. Because attempts at complex structures are consistently faulty and frequent errors impede smooth reading, a Band 5 score is appropriate for grammatical range and accuracy.
