IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration below illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles.
Overall, the process contains 8 steps starting with adding flour to storage silos and ending with sealing of noodle boxes. However, the major steps include dough preparation, placing dough strips into noodle discs, and cooking.
The procedure begins with transporting flour into storage silos, after which it is transferred into mixer along with water and oil. Following this stage the mixture passes through rollers to prepare dough sheets. Furthermore, the strips are made from the dough sheets. In next step, the dough strips are added into noodles discs where they are cooked in oil and dried. Once noodles are cooked they are transferred into cups and vegetables and spices are added into noodles to make them tasty. Finally instant noodles are ready to seal and labels are place at last.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully identifies the overall manufacturing process of instant noodles and outlines the key stages from start to finish. In the overview, the student correctly highlights that there are 8 steps and mentions major phases like dough preparation, cooking, and shaping. However, the student makes a minor redundancy in the opening sentence by using 'illustration' and 'illustrates' together. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains only 140 words, falling 10 words short of the 150-word minimum. This shortfall impacts the overall development of the response, preventing it from reaching a higher band score. Nonetheless, key features are adequately summarized and compared overall.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression, guiding the reader from the storage silos to the final sealing of boxes. Cohesive devices such as 'starting with', 'beginning with', 'after which', 'Following this stage', and 'Finally' are used to sequence the steps logically. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak, as the entire body of the process is condensed into a single block alongside the introduction and overview. While referencing is generally clear, the organization lacks fully distinct paragraphs for different phases of the diagram, which limits the score for this criterion to a band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'storage silos', 'mixer', 'rollers', 'dough sheets', and 'spices'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, though word choice occasionally feels repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'noodles' and 'dough' in close proximity. There are minor awkward phrasings like 'labels are place at last', but these do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient for the task and demonstrates a reasonable attempt at describing a technical diagram, fitting comfortably within the band 6.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and time-dependent clauses such as 'after which it is transferred' and 'Once noodles are cooked they are transferred'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, most notably the missing preposition in 'labels are place at last' (should be 'placed') and the missing comma after introductory phrases. However, the majority of the simple sentences are accurate, and the errors do not impede the overall flow or understanding of the manufacturing process. The grammatical control aligns well with a band 6.0.
