IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing of instant noodles in a factory. Firstly, the flour is filled in the storage silos from where it is taken to the mixer where the flour is mixed with oil and water.
Once mixed properly, it is transferred on to rollers where the flour is coverted into thin dough sheets. These dhough sheets are then cut into strips to make noodle discs. These discs are then fried in cooking oil and pass through a conveyor. The process of drying also occurs here in order to remove the excessive oil.The noodle discs are then carefully packed into cups along with vegetables and spices sachets.
Lastly, one of the most important steps is to label and seal the cups because otherwise the company will remain unknown. Once it is done the the final product comes to shape and is good enough to be transported.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process shown in the diagram, beginning with the storage silos and flour mixing, progressing through rolling, cutting, frying, drying, cup filling, and concluding with labelling and sealing. The information is accurately reported without any major omissions or misinterpretations. An overview is present, though it is slightly embedded rather than distinct, and the progression of steps is clearly traced. However, the explanation regarding the labelling stage introduces subjective commentary ('because otherwise the company will remain unknown'), which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report where purely objective description is required. Despite this minor flaw in tone and lack of deeper synthesis, the core requirements of selecting and reporting main features are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the stages, such as 'Firstly', 'Once mixed properly', 'Then', and 'Lastly'. Paragraphing is utilized, though the response is somewhat compressed into three blocks; creating more distinct paragraphs for the preparation, cooking, and packaging stages would improve visual organization. Referencing is generally clear, with phrases like 'these dough sheets' and 'these discs' effectively linking consecutive sentences. While cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical rather than fully flexible, the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a process diagram, incorporating terms such as 'storage silos', 'mixer', 'rollers', 'dough sheets', 'conveyor', and 'sachets'. There are, however, a few spelling and word choice errors, such as 'coverted' instead of 'converted' and 'dhough' instead of 'dough'. Additionally, the phrase 'comes to shape' is slightly unnatural and less precise than standard academic collocations like 'takes shape' or 'is formed'. While the student attempts less common lexical items related to manufacturing, the inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band, though they do not impede overall communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating passive voice constructions which are appropriate for describing a manufacturing process, such as 'flour is filled' and 'are then fried'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors, including a missing comma before a dependent clause, a minor typo ('the the final product'), and an overly colloquial/subjective clause at the end ('because otherwise the company will remain unknown'). Complex sentence forms are attempted with varying degrees of success, but the errors are infrequent enough that they rarely impede understanding. Overall control of basic grammar is sound.
