Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to describe the process of manufacturing instant noodles, capturing several key stages such as flour delivery, mixing, rolling into dough sheets and strips, shaping into discs, cooking, drying, adding spices, and final sealing. However, the response suffers from significant weaknesses in task completion. Most notably, there is no distinct overview provided, which is a mandatory requirement for a Band 6 or higher in Academic Task 1. Additionally, the writing contains meta-commentary ('In this writing we summarize...'), which is inappropriate for an academic report. The progression of the process is generally chronological, but the lack of an overarching summary and the inclusion of conversational framing prevent the response from achieving a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text shows some overall organisation by following the chronological steps of the diagram from storage silos to final labelling. However, the paragraphing is very poor, with the main body squeezed into long, poorly structured blocks, and the conclusion merely repeats the step-by-step list rather than synthesising the information. Cohesive devices are repetitive and basic (e.g., 'and', 'next', 'then', 'now'), resulting in a mechanical flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'Now it is moves roller', which disrupts the logical progression. While the steps can be followed, the structural and cohesive weaknesses limit the response to a Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily relies on words directly lifted from the prompt and diagram, such as 'flour', 'storage silos', 'mixer', 'dough sheets', and 'labelling and sealing'. There are frequent lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'procedure of manufacturing', 'truck unload the flour', 'plane form' (instead of flat or plain), and 'covert it into' (instead of convert). Attempts at less common vocabulary are either inaccurate or non-existent. While the meaning is generally communicated despite these limitations, the vocabulary range is narrow and restricted.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The student relies heavily on simple sentences and basic coordinate structures joined by 'and'. Where complex structures are attempted, they are frequently ungrammatical or poorly formed, such as 'Its shows how noodles prepared' (missing auxiliary verb and subject-verb agreement) and 'after the filling in cups, its moves for labelling'. Punctuation is weak, with run-on sentences and comma splices present throughout the text (e.g., '...change the style of stips into round shape. Then the next procedure...'). Grammatical errors occur in almost every sentence, affecting subject-verb agreement, prepositions, and verb forms, though communication is rarely completely blocked.
