Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles.

Overall, the manufacturing process of instant noodles consist of eight different stages and a number of different tools and infrastructures, from the storing flour, processing and labeling and sealing the instant noodles cup.

At the first stage of the process, flour stored in silos(1) and it is mixed with the water and oil in a mixer(2). The combined ingredients are passed through several rollers which create sheets for dough(3), which are subsequently transformed into dough stripes via mechanical cutting(4).

In the next stage, dough stripes are shaped into discs(5). Then these noodles discs undergo cooking-oil and drying processe(6). Once dried, the noodles are then put into the cups where some vegetables and different spices are added to increase the flavour (7). Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main stages of the instant noodles manufacturing process. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, stating that the process consists of eight distinct stages, which effectively captures the essence of the diagram. Key features such as storage, mixing, rolling, shaping into strips and discs, cooking, drying, adding vegetables and spices, and finally labeling and sealing are all accurately reported and logically sequenced. The details align well with the provided visual data without introducing extraneous information or misinterpretations. Therefore, the response demonstrates a clear and well-developed understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological flow of the diagram. Cohesive devices such as 'At the first stage', 'In the next stage', 'Then', and 'Finally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the various steps of the manufacturing process. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different phases of the process. Although some cohesive ties are fairly standard, the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process with some flexibility and precision, using terms like 'manufacturing process', 'combined ingredients', 'subsequently transformed', and 'mechanical cutting'. However, there are some minor lexical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'storing flour' instead of 'storing of flour', 'sheets for dough' instead of 'dough sheets', and 'dough stripes' instead of 'dough strips'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and passive constructions like 'flour stored in silos(1) and it is mixed' (though missing an auxiliary verb here) and 'these cups are labeled with brand logo and sealed with a lid'. Grammatical control is generally fair, but there are a few noticeable errors, such as missing verbs ('flour stored' instead of 'flour is stored'), a comma splice in the final paragraph ('with noodles, vegetables and spices; these cups'), and an article omission ('brand logo' instead of 'a brand logo'). Nonetheless, these errors do not impede overall communication.
