IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The illustration depicts the process of manufacturing instant noodles.
Overall, it can be seen that the process by which instant noodles are manufactured is a multistep linear process which consists of 8 different stages and a number of different tools and infrastructure. The process starts with storage silos and ends with both labeling and sealing.
In the first stage, from a truck, flour is stored into bulk silos. Then, flour is transmitted to a mixer where it is mixed with both water and oil. In addition, the mixed noodles are transformed into dough sheets by rollers. Following this, dough sheets are also converted into dough strips.
In stage six, diagram shows usually simultaneous frying and drying. Then, noodles are packed into cups where toppings such as vegetables and spices are added. In the last and final stage, these mixed noodles with vegetables and spices are labelled and sealed on cups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the prompt by describing the complete linear manufacturing process of instant noodles from flour storage to final labeling and sealing. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, which appropriately outlines the main features, noting that it is an eight-stage process. Key details from the visual data, such as the mixing of flour with water and oil, rollers creating dough sheets and strips, frying and drying, and the final packaging into cups with spices, are accurately reported. The response is precise and aligns closely with the provided visual information without notable omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, overall summary, initial stages, and final stages of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'In the first stage', 'Then', 'In addition', and 'Following this' are employed to guide the reader through the sequence of steps, though occasional transitions feel slightly mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for a process description, incorporating domain-specific terms like 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', 'simultaneous frying and drying', and 'labeling and sealing'. While the lexical range is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision, there is limited use of sophisticated or less common lexical items, placing it firmly within band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Overall, it can be seen that the process by which instant noodles are manufactured is a multistep linear process...' Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled. Although there is a minor article omission in 'diagram shows usually simultaneous frying and drying' (missing 'the'), these errors are infrequent and do not impede overall communication.
