IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
teh diagram provides the detailed process, illustrating the principal stages involved in the production of instant noodles. The process shows how the noodles goes throught the series of different stages from storage silos to labelling the packet of instant noodles.
Overall, two key features are particularly noticeable. Firstly, the process consist of several interchangeable stages following a linear pattern. Secondly, he mostly significant feature is that the noodles are made by using machines in the factory.
Intially the process requires flour which is collected in the storage silos, after that water and oil is combined in the mixer. Subsequently, the mixture is transferred to the rollers before making dough sheets. Thereafter, the next stage undergoes to the dough strips leading to the dough discs. Following that, the dough requires cooking in the oil and after that noodles are dried.
Moving to the subsequent stages, in which the noodles are transferred into cups and vegetables and spices are added in the noodles for taste. Finally, instant noodles are packaged with a sealing and the process culminating in labelling the packet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully covers all the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process, beginning with the storage silos and flour delivery and concluding with labelling and sealing. The overview, although containing a slightly awkward point about interchangeable stages, attempts to highlight the overall linear and automated nature of the process. Most steps from the diagram are accurately reported in a sequential manner, including the mixing, rolling, cutting into sheets and strips, shaping into discs, cooking and drying, and finally adding vegetables, spices, and cups. While the analysis is generally clear and covers the process well, it lacks deeper grouping or comparison of the stages which prevents it from reaching a higher band. Overall, the task is adequately addressed, earning a band score of 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a clear overall progression and is divided into logical paragraphs that separate the introduction, overview, and body steps of the manufacturing process. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, using transition phrases such as 'Intially', 'after that', 'Subsequently', 'Thereafter', and 'Finally'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in minor awkward transitions and repetitive sentence structures ('after that noodles are dried', 'after that noodles are transferred'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the mechanical nature of the linking devices keeps the coherence at a band 6 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing process-related terms such as 'manufacturing', 'production', 'storage silos', 'mixture', 'rollers', 'dough sheets', 'cooking', 'drying', and 'sealing'. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'teh' instead of 'the', 'throught' instead of 'through', 'consist' instead of 'consists', and 'he mostly significant feature' instead of 'the most significant feature'. Furthermore, some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'the process undergoes to the dough strips'. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, making this a solid band 6 performance for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'flour which is collected in the storage silos' and 'water and oil is combined in the mixer'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('how the noodles goes', 'the process consist', 'water and oil is combined'), article omissions or misuse, and typographical errors. Complex structures are often faulty. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Control of grammar and punctuation is moderate.
