IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates how instant noodles are manufactures.
Overall, the process takes 8 stages, beginning with storage silos and ending with labelling and sealing. The process includes several other stages like mixing, cooking and drying, packaging and so on.
To begin with, flour is stored in large storage silos and the flour is sent to a mixer where water and oil is added. In the third stage, the dough is passed through rollers which produces thin dough sheets. These dough sheets are converted into dough strips with the help of a machine.
In the fifth stage, another machine cuts the dough strips and gives them the shape of noodles discs. Furthermore, the noodles discs are sent to cook in oil and drying before placing them in cups. In addition, vegetable and spices are added in the cups and finally labelling and sealing is done on the cups before distributing the instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process. An overview is provided, noting that the process has eight stages beginning with storage silos and ending with labelling and sealing. However, some aspects of the response are under-developed. For instance, the transition involving cups, vegetable and spices, and the final sealing stage lacks full elaboration regarding how the cups interact with the machinery, which keeps the task achievement at a moderate level. The selection of key features is generally accurate, tracing the transformation from flour to the final packaged product without major omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, successfully guiding the reader through the sequential steps of the diagram. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate different phases of the manufacturing cycle, such as the initial preparation and the subsequent shaping and cooking stages. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas together, such as "To begin with", "In the third stage", and "In addition". However, some mechanical cohesion is evident, and referencing is not always completely smooth, pointing to the bridge between the lower band and fully seamless progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying process-related terms such as "storage silos", "mixer", "dough sheets", and "roller conveyor". There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is accompanied by some word choice errors and slips, such as writing "manufactures" instead of "manufactured", and "noodles discs" instead of "noodle discs". Furthermore, phrases like "gives them the shape of noodles discs" are somewhat simplistic. These lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher rating.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of sentence structure for describing a process. Examples such as "flour is stored in large storage silos and the flour is sent to a mixer" illustrate the use of coordination, while passive voice constructions are appropriately employed throughout the process description. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("water and oil is added", "vegetable and spices are added"), but these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication.
