IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of how instant noodles are manufactured, involving machinery. Overall it shows 8 number of stages, starting with transporting the flour to storages silos, ending with labelling and sealing the cups of instant noodles.

Entire process is process is linear, each and every step is essential to achieve the final product. Looking more closely the process starts with transferring the flour to storage silos then comes stage two where flour is moved the mixer where oil and water are also added to it. In stage 3 dough is made it is then passed onto a machine which produces dough strips as an outcome, this happens in stage 4. In stage 5 dough strips are then converted to noodle discs by passing them through another machine, subsequently in stage 6 cooking oil is added to noodle discs then they are dried. Moving onto stage 7 noodles are placed inside cups, vegetable and spices are added to cups. Stage 8 is the final stage where cups are labelled and sealed.

This is the whole process of manufacturing instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the instant noodle manufacturing process. The overview clearly states that there are eight stages, beginning with flour storage and ending with labelling and sealing. However, some parts of the process are developed more fully than others; for instance, the description of the initial stages is detailed, whereas later transitions are somewhat rushed. While key steps such as mixing, rolling, shaping, and cooking are mentioned, the response would benefit from a more balanced selection and extension of comparative features across the entire sequence to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the first stage to the final step of the diagram. The writer uses basic cohesive devices and sequential transitions such as 'starting with', 'then comes stage two', and 'subsequently in stage six' to guide the reader through the manufacturing process. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly with the phrase 'is then' and the rigid numbering of steps. Paragraphing is also underutilised, as the body of the process description is condensed into a single dense block instead of being separated into logical steps.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying process-related terms like 'manufacturing', 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', and 'vegetable and spices'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'subsequently' and 'transferring', though there are minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing '8 number of stages' instead of 'eight stages'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, but a wider range of precise lexical items and more flexible phrasing would be required to lift this response further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing relative clauses and sequential structures like 'by passing them through another machine'. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as run-on sentences ('In stage 3 dough is made it is then passed...'), missing articles ('transferred to storage silos'), and slight repetition in clause patterns. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning without significant difficulty.
