IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles.
Overall, the most noticeable feature is that the shaping of dough strips into noodle discs and cooking it with oil to dry the discs.
First, the flour were storaged in silos. Secondly, the flour gets transferred to mixer and mixed with water and oil to form a soft dough. Next, dough sheets were formed by using dough rollers machine. Then, thin dough sheets were formed inside the dough roller which were then cut and split into thin strips.
The subsequent stage was when dough strips were formed into noodles discs. Then, noodles disc were cooked with cooking oil and then dried to form a dry disc. Afterwards, the dried noodles were filled into the cups along with vegetables and spices. Finally, the cups are labelled and sealed into the labels machine and sent to the whole sale shops to manufacture in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all the main parts of the diagram by outlining the entire manufacturing process from flour storage to the final packaged instant noodles. There is a clear overall trend identified, noting key stages such as shaping the dough into discs and cooking them. However, some aspects of the process are under-developed or slightly inaccurate, such as mentioning that the final product is sent to 'whole sale shops to manufacture in the market,' which misinterprets the final step of the conveyor and packaging phase shown in the diagram. While the main features are selected and reported, a more precise description of the intermediate steps would elevate the clarity and development of the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical chronological progression that guides the reader from the initial storage silos to the final sealing stage. Cohesive devices such as 'First,' 'Secondly,' 'Next,' 'Then,' and 'Afterwards' are used to sequence the steps, though their application can sometimes feel mechanical and repetitive. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping the sentences into a more structured body of paragraphs rather than a single dense block after the introduction would improve the overall layout and flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'storage silos,' 'mixer,' 'dough sheets,' and 'vegetables and spices.' The student attempts less common vocabulary, but this is sometimes accompanied by word-choice inaccuracies or awkward phrasing, such as 'storaged' instead of 'stored,' 'whole sale,' and 'dough rollers machine.' Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the sequence of manufacturing steps without significant difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, describing the linear process using passive voice constructions like 'flour were storaged' and 'dough sheets were formed.' There are several notable errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the flour were,' 'noodles disc were') and article misuse. Despite these persistent errors in grammar and verb forms, the sentence structures remain generally understandable and do not impede the overall flow of communication for the reader.
