IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram depicts the manufacturing process of instant noodles. Overall, it is a linear process involving eight different steps, beginning with the storing of flour to the packaging of the noodles.
To begin, flour are stored in multiple large silos. The flour are then tranported to a mixer which mixes the flour with oil and water. After mixing, rollers roll out the mixed contents which are then converted in dough sheets. The dough sheets are then passed through a conveyer belt which changes the sheets into thin dough strips.
Next, these dough strips are transformend into noodles discs which are then cooked in hot cooking oil and then left to dry. Likewise, the cooked noodles are placed inside plastic cups where vegetables and spices are added. After adding the ingredients, the plastic cups are labelled and sealed tightly before they are shipped.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all main steps of the instant noodle manufacturing process, beginning with storage silos and ending with labelling and sealing. An appropriate overview is provided, noting that it is a linear process involving eight different steps. However, certain stages are under-developed or treated superficially, such as the roller and cutting phases where dough sheets and strips are formed. Furthermore, the word count requirement of 150 words was not met, as the response falls short at 141 words, which impacts the overall completeness of the task response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the initial stages of processing, and the final packaging phase. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the steps, using transitions such as 'To begin', 'After mixing', and 'Next'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel slightly mechanical, preventing the response from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the sequence of industrial actions with terms like 'manufacturing', 'silos', 'conveyer belt', and 'sealed'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary such as 'tranported' and 'transformend', but these reveal spelling and word-form inaccuracies. Word choice is generally functional, though minor errors in collocation and spelling do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and passive constructions appropriately in places. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('flour are stored', 'The flour are then tranported'), and minor preposition or article slips. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the described process without significant difficulty.
