IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates how instant noodles are manufactured.

Overall, the process consists of eight steps, beginning with the storage of flour into silos and ending with labelling and sealing of the cup noodles.

The process began with storage of flour in large silos. The flour mixed with water and oil in the mixer machine. The rollers made a dough and then rollers formed that dough into dough sheets in third step. In fourth step, the dough sheets cut into the dough strips. After making them in strips, the machine covert the strips into the noodles discs. The noodles discs then fried in cooking oil and then undergo drying process. In seventh step, the noodles discs are now added in the cups and the cups are organized and added with vegetables and spices. In the last stage, cups undergo labelling and sealing process. The instant noodles are now ready to be supplied in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process, satisfying the basic requirements of Academic Task 1. The overview clearly highlights that the process consists of eight steps, beginning with flour storage and ending with labelling and sealing. However, the details provided in the body paragraphs tend to be somewhat mechanical and list-like, with certain steps described rather simplistically. For instance, the transition from dough sheets to strips and discs could be expanded with clearer chronological links. While the information is generally accurate and grounded in the visual data, some features are slightly under-developed, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. To improve, you should ensure that every stage of a process diagram is integrated smoothly with precise descriptions of how inputs and outputs transform.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The report presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical chronological progression that matches the steps in the diagram. Paragraphing is used adequately, separating the introduction, overview, and the sequential body of the process. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or repetitive, relying heavily on transitional phrases like 'In fourth step' and 'In seventh step' rather than a more varied range of cohesive devices. Referencing and progression within sentences can also feel abrupt. To reach a higher level, try to link consecutive steps more naturally using relative clauses, participial phrases, or adverbial connectors to create a smoother, more sophisticated flow of information.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'storage silos', 'mixer machine', 'dough sheets', and 'labelling and sealing'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'The flour mixed with water and oil' (missing passive voice or auxiliary verb) and 'the machine covert the strips' (spelling error for 'convert'). Attempts at less common vocabulary are limited, and occasional errors in word form occur. To improve your lexical score, focus on precise word formation, correct spelling, and expanding your range of vocabulary to describe industrial processes without relying on repetitive verbs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, particularly regarding missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and verb form issues. For example, writing 'in third step' and 'cut into the dough strips' lacks necessary articles, while 'The process began with storage of flour' shifts tense awkwardly compared to the present tense used elsewhere in the description. Complex structures are attempted, but frequent minor errors in grammar persist. To achieve higher bands, ensure greater consistency in tense usage throughout a process description and pay closer attention to articles and prepositions in grammatical patterns.
