The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the procedure of that how instant noodles are prepared in a factory.
Overall, there are 9 main steps involved in instant noodles manufacturing process, from storing flour in silos to mixing them with water and adding spices and vegetables to cups and sealing them all together and then labelling.
In this process, flour is first transported through a truck to the warehouse and stored in silos and then it is mixed with water and oil in a mixture and then in third part, a roller is used to flaten the dough into sheets. After that the sheets are cutted into strips and in the fifth part, the noodles discs are made from the strips and then cooked and dried.
Furthermore, the dried noodles discs are putted into a cup and different types of vegetables and various types of spicies are added to the cup in the seventh step, and in the last the cups are sealed packed and it is labelled with the companies logo and are ready to be cooked.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the instant noodles manufacturing process, from storing flour in silos to labelling and sealing the final cups. However, certain parts of the process are developed more fully than others. While the initial steps such as mixing flour with water and oil and forming dough sheets and strips are clearly mentioned, the later stages are somewhat generalised. For instance, the description groups the addition of vegetables, spices, cups, sealing, and labelling into a fast-paced sequence without fully detailing the visual progression of how the cups are assembled. To reach a higher level, the response needs to extend and support all steps of the process more evenly, providing a more balanced overview of every stage shown in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and logical progression through the sequential stages of the manufacturing process. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader from one step to the next, using phrases such as 'Overall', 'In this process', 'After that', and 'Furthermore'. However, the cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly with the excessive use of coordinating conjunctions like 'and then' to link multiple clauses together within a single sentence. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the overview, and the body details, but the logical flow between sentences would be significantly enhanced with more varied transitional markers and better referencing to avoid run-on sentence structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the general actions required in a manufacturing process using words such as 'transported', 'stored', 'mixed', and 'cooked'. The writer attempts to use less common vocabulary items related to the diagram, such as 'silos', 'discs', and 'sealing', but encounters some inaccuracies in word choice and word formation, such as 'flaten' instead of flatten, 'cutted' instead of cut, and 'putted' instead of put. There are also minor lexical lapses in collocation, such as 'companies logo' instead of company logo. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limited precision in word choice that prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial phrases alongside basic structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including awkward phrasing like 'the procedure of that how instant noodles are prepared', incorrect verb forms like 'spicies' (spelling, though classified under lexical control, affects word form), and missing articles or prepositions in phrases like 'in a mixture' or 'in the last'. Although these grammatical errors occur, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns and reduce the frequency of basic structural slips.
