IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram illutrates the making process of instant noodles at the their manufacturing units. The process in total has 8 steps.

Overall, the instant cup noodles we consume regularly, can be seen, to have followed series of tasks in its manufacturing process, starting from flour storage,to dough making, preparing noodles dics, drying them, and pouring and packing it in cups to be distributed. The overall process can be seen to be more automatic, with negligible human interference in its making.

First of all, the flour is carried to the manufacturing facility, where it get stored in storage silos. Once done, then flour along with water and oil is poured into a mixing container, afterwards the mixture converts into noodles dough, which then is passed through the rollers, to form dough sheets. After this, the sheets are then passed by a long machine, where sheets gets the shape of straight dough strips, later on these dough strips, gets converted into separated round noodles discs, the shape the noodles comes up when purchased from market and are just raw.

Further, the cooking process of noodles dics are then made in oil, and later on the cooked discs get dried, subsequently to that, the prepaired noodles dics are then putt into identical cups, along with few vegetables and spices. And finally, the filled cups are then wrapped up with specific labels, and are then sealed to be distributed for sales purposes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process, beginning with the storage silos and concluding with labelling and sealing. An appropriate overview is provided, outlining the sequential nature of the eight steps and noting the automated aspect of the procedure. However, certain parts of the process are somewhat generalised or lack fine detail, such as the exact interaction between the rollers and the dough sheets. While the main features are successfully reported and comparisons or progressions are made where relevant, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. The progression from flour delivery to final packaging is nevertheless clear and covers the key visual data accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. Information is grouped into sensible paragraphs that separate the introduction, the overall features, the initial preparation stages, and the final cooking and packaging steps. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, using expressions such as 'First of all', 'Once done', and 'Further'. However, some of the referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'then' throughout the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but finer cohesive management would be needed to achieve a more seamless flow characteristic of a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying process-specific concepts such as 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', 'vegetables and spices', and 'labelling and sealing'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary items, though these are occasionally marred by word-choice, word-form, or spelling inaccuracies, such as 'illutrates' instead of 'illustrates', 'dics' instead of 'discs', and 'prepaired' instead of 'prepared'. Phrasing like 'the shape the noodles comes up when purchased' is somewhat informal and imprecise. These lexical errors and awkward collocations do not heavily impede communication, but they restrict the range and precision of the response, sitting comfortably within the mid-level range for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial phrases to link stages together, as seen in 'where it get stored in storage silos' and 'to form dough sheets'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('flour is carried... where it get stored') and minor prepositional or article slips. Punctuation is occasionally erratic, with comma splices and uneven spacing. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the basic meaning of each process step remains clear. A wider range of error-free complex structures and tighter control over syntactic agreements would be required to advance further.
