IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates an industrial process for manufacturing instant noodles.

Overall, the process includes eight distinct stages. In the initial stage the massive amount of flour is stored in the silos which is then converted into noodles and dried to be packed with vegetableas and spices. Finally, each cup is labeled and sealed to protect it from environmental bacteria.

In the initial stage, the noodle manufacturing begins. It is done by mixing the flour with water and oil to form a dough, the flour is obtained from silos where it is stored in huge quantities. After forming a dough, a noodle manufacturing machine is used that contains rollers toflatten the dough into dough sheets. Following this, a strip cutter is used to cut these dough sheets into several strips, which are then shaped into noodles disc. These discs are then deep-fried in oil to prevent them from sticking after that it is dried to be packed.

In the subsequent phase, the noodles are packaged to sell commercially. First of all, vegetables and spices are added into cups of noodles, which are finally labeled and sealed to protect it from bacteria.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by describing the overall manufacturing process of instant noodles from flour storage to final labeling and sealing. An overview is provided, highlighting the eight distinct stages. However, some aspects of the process are under-developed or lack precise detail. For instance, the transition from dough sheets to strips and noodle discs is somewhat condensed, and the inclusion of outside details like 'to protect it from environmental bacteria' ventures beyond purely reporting the visual data. The selection of main features is mostly relevant, but greater extension on specific mechanical actions shown in the diagram would elevate the task response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from the initial stages through to final packaging. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the introduction, the core manufacturing process, and the final packaging phase, which helps structure the response logically. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or relies on repetitive transitional phrases such as 'In the initial stage' and 'After forming a dough'. Referencing could also be smoother, as pronouns like 'it' in phrases such as 'after that it is dried' create slight ambiguity regarding whether the noodle discs or individual pieces are being referenced.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'industrial process', 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', and 'deep-fried'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by inaccuracy, such as 'vegetableas' (spelling error) or awkward word choices like 'noodles disc' instead of 'noodle discs'. Word choice and spelling errors do not impede communication, as the overall meaning remains clear throughout the description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'where it is stored in huge quantities' and 'to flatten the dough into dough sheets'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('massive amount of flour'), subject-verb agreement issues ('toflatten' formatting, pluralization mismatches like 'noodles disc'), and run-on structures or comma splices in sentences like 'These discs are then deep-fried in oil to prevent them from sticking after that it is dried to be packed.' Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication.
