IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram outlines the stages involved in the manufacturing of instant noodles from the storage silos to the final stage of the labelling and sealing before going to the market.

Overall, the process is divided into eight significant stages, such as storing the flour and then adding ingradients on each stage to form the instant noodles at the end.

Intially, the flour is store in the storage silos, later on this flour is combine with water and oil into the mixer. Then, the mixture is passed through the dough sheets into the dough strips for the formation of noodles discs just before adding cooking oil and drying them. Furthermore, these dryed discs are distributed among the cups. These cups are toped by vegetables and spices for the better taste. In the end cups filled by the instant noodles are labelled for the branding and sealed at the same stage before exporting as the final product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all main stages of the diagram from the initial flour storage to the final labelling and sealing process, satisfying the basic requirements for selecting and reporting main features. An overview is provided, noting that the process has eight significant stages involving the addition of ingredients. However, some parts of the process are handled rather generally without fully developing the specific mechanisms shown in the visual data, such as the exact roller and disc formation stages. While the key steps are identified, the lack of deeper elaboration on how the components interconnect prevents the response from achieving a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear separation of introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices such as "Overall", "Intially", "later on", "Then", "Furthermore", and "In the end" are used to sequence the progression of the manufacturing process. However, some cohesive referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and paragraphing could be structured more effectively to group related steps of the process together. Despite these minor flaws, the logical flow is maintained throughout, ensuring the reader can easily follow the steps from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common terms related to manufacturing such as "storage silos", "dough sheets", and "labelling and sealing". However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that slightly detract from the precision of the writing, such as "ingradients", "Intially", "store" instead of "stored", "combine" instead of "combined", "dryed" instead of "dried", and "toped" instead of "topped". These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a limitation in precise lexical control that keeps the score at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory prepositional phrases and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors present, particularly with passive voice constructions and verb forms, such as "the flour is store" and "cups filled by the instant noodles are labelled". Punctuation and article usage also exhibit minor inconsistencies. While these errors occur frequently enough to prevent mastery, the meaning remains generally clear and the errors rarely impede overall communication, fulfilling the criteria for this band level.
