IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The presented process depicts information regarding the procedurure of making instant noodles.

Overall, it can be observed that there are several steps included in making instant noodles, which initiates when silos are stored in a factory, while culminates with labelling and sealing.

Turning to the details, it is evident that firstly, silos are stored in a factory and a floor is transported with the help of truck. Afterthat, rollers are used to mix oil and water in the mixer which helps to make dough sheets. In the forth step, dough strips are then converted into noodles dics before cooking.

Moving futher, noodles dics are sent for cooking and drying

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only minimally, failing to reach the required minimum word count of 150 words by stopping short at 109 words. Because of this severe length deficiency, the content remains notably incomplete, omitting major stages of the manufacturing process such as the final packaging, labelling, and sealing steps. The student attempts to outline the initial phases, mentioning the storage silos, the mixer, rollers, dough sheets, and dough strips, but the description lacks sufficient detail and fails to provide a comprehensive summary of the entire diagram. To achieve a higher score, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is fully met and provide a balanced overview that covers all stages from flour storage to the final packaged instant noodles.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation with an introductory sentence and some transitional attempts like 'Turning to the details' and 'Moving futher'. However, the response lacks clear overall progression due to its abrupt ending and lack of complete paragraphing. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'which initiates when silos are stored in a factory, while culminates', which misuses conjunctions. Referencing and logical connections between sentences also falter, making the sequence harder to follow in places. To improve, the writer needs to use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices and ensure that ideas are linked smoothly throughout a fully developed essay structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing several noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that affect precision. For example, the student writes 'procedurure' instead of procedure, 'floor' instead of flour, and repeatedly spells 'discs' as 'dics'. There are also awkward collocations, such as 'silos are stored in a factory', which misinterprets the diagram's depiction of flour being stored in silos. While the writer attempts some less common terms like 'initiates' and 'culminates', the lexical control is weak. To move to a higher band, the student must expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and ensure words are used in their correct contextual collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple constructions alongside flawed attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical and mechanical errors, including preposition and article issues, such as 'in the forth step' (fourth step) and awkward passive constructions like 'a floor is transported with the help of truck' (missing an article before truck). Punctuation is also incomplete, as the response trails off with an unfinished sentence fragment at the end ('Moving futher, noodles dics are sent for cooking and drying'). To improve, the writer needs to increase grammatical accuracy, ensure proper punctuation and article use, and demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns.
