IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The presented process depicts information regarding the procedure of making instant noodles.

Overall, it can be observed that there are several steps included in making instant noodles, which begins with storage of silos in a factory, while culminates with labelling and sealing.

Turning to the details, it is evident that firstly, silos are stored in a factory and a flour is transported with the help of truck. Afterthat, rollers are used to mix oil and water in the mixer which helps to make dough sheets. In the forth step, dough strips are then converted into noodles discs before cooking.

Moving futher, noodles discs are sent for cooking and drying procedure, where oil is added. In the folllowing step, vegetables as well as spices are added into cups.

Eventually, insatnt noodles are sent for labellling and sealing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially, as it is 14 words short of the 150-word minimum requirement. While the writer attempts to outline the main stages of the manufacturing process from flour storage to labelling and sealing, several key steps and details are under-developed or missing. For instance, the transition from dough sheets to strips and discs is compressed, and important elements like the rollers and cups are glossed over. The overview provides a basic summary, but the mechanical nature of the process means ideas are somewhat repetitive and limited in extension. To reach a higher level, the response must meet the minimum word count and provide a more fully developed, comprehensive account of all diagram stages and their interconnections.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and logical progression through the chronological steps of the process. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Turning to the details', 'Moving futher', and 'Eventually'. However, paragraphing is somewhat basic, and referencing can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive. For example, 'Moving futher' contains a spelling slip and introduces a transition that feels slightly forced. To improve further, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between the complex stages of the diagram without relying on rigid formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common process-related terms such as 'storage silos', 'converted', and 'procedure'. However, there are noticeable word choice inaccuracies and spelling slips, such as 'storage of silos' instead of 'storage silos', 'Afterthat' as a single misspelled word, 'forth' instead of 'fourth', 'futher' instead of 'further', and 'insatnt'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations reflect a limited range and occasional strain on the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice, correct spelling, and more natural collocation of manufacturing vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation remains inconsistent. There are frequent errors in prepositional usage and passive voice structures, such as 'silos are stored in a factory and a flour is transported with the help of truck', where 'a flour' is an incorrect use of an uncountable noun and 'truck' lacks an article. Additionally, punctuation and sentence boundary issues occasionally surface. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they represent a recurring pattern of grammatical slips in basic structures. Expanding the range of error-free complex sentences and tightening control over articles and prepositions will lift this criterion.
