IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
THE PROCESS DIAGRAM GIVES THE 8 STAGES TO PRODUCE INSTANT NOODLES.
OVERALL, THE MANUFACTURING OF NOODLES IS AN EIGHT-STAGE PROCESS, WHICH STARTS FROM STORING FLOUR IN SILOS TO LABELLING AND SEALING OF NOODLES. WATER, OIL, VEGETABLES AND SPICES ARE ADDED DURING THE PROCESS.
A TRUCK FILL THE STORAGE SILOS WITH FLOUR. FLOUR IS THEN PUT IN THE MIXER MACHINE WHERE WATER AND OIL ARE ADDED TOGETHER. THE WET FLOUR IS MOVED FURTHER WITH THE HELP OF ROLLERS INSTALLED WITH DOUGH SHEETS, FLOUR UNDERGO DOUGH STRIPS WITH THE HELP OF SHEETS WHERE THEY GETS SHAPE OF NOODLES.
FURTHERMORE, THE NOODLES GETS PROCESSED INTO CIRCULAR DISC SHAPE. AFTERWARDS, THE DISCS ARE FRIED IN THE OIL AND KEPT FOR DRYING FOR SOME TIME. THE FINAL PRODUCT IS THEN FILLED IN NUMBER OF CUPS WHERE VEGETABLES AND SPICES ARE ALSO MIXED. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE CUP OF INSTANT NOODLES GET LABELLING AND SEALING AND THEN TRANSPORTED TO SHOPS.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the manufacturing process from the flour storage silos to the final labelling and sealing. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, summarising the overall nature of the process and mentioning the key inputs. However, some stages are somewhat under-developed or mechanically described, such as the transition from dough sheets to strips and discs. The reporting is generally accurate and grounded in the visual data, though certain steps could have been elaborated further to fully satisfy the higher band criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. Paragraphing is utilized adequately, separating the introduction, overview, and body steps. Cohesive devices such as 'furthermore', 'afterwards', and 'subsequently' are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, though referencing and linking occasionally feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher level, the writer could make the logical transitions between sentences smoother and more varied, reducing reliance on basic sequential connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the main actions involved in producing instant noodles with terms such as 'manufacturing', 'silos', 'mixer', 'rollers', and 'discs'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary like 'subsequently' and 'transported', but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'a truck fill the storage silos' and 'flour undergo dough strips'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor word-choice and word-form errors occasionally emerge, which keeps the lexical score at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'A truck fill' instead of 'fills', 'flour undergo' instead of 'undergoes', and 'gets shape of noodles' instead of 'takes the shape of noodles'. Punctuation is basic, and sentences attempting more complex structures often contain errors. While these mistakes rarely impede overall communication, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the writing from achieving a higher band.
