Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. It covers the eight main steps of the instant noodle manufacturing process, but the description lacks sufficient detail and the overview is underdeveloped. Crucially, the response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, falling short at 122 words. While the main stages are outlined in a sequential manner, some details are missed or treated too superficially, such as the specific transformation of the dough sheets into strips and discs before cooking. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is fully met and provide a more thorough, extended overview of the entire manufacturing process.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation in the text, using chronological transition words such as initially, after that, in next step, and in last process. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas beyond a simple list of sequential steps, and paragraphing is somewhat fragmented. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on 'after that' and 'in next process'. Reference words lack clarity at times, leading to a somewhat choppy flow. To improve cohesion and coherence, the writer should employ a wider and more sophisticated range of cohesive devices, ensure smoother transitions between stages, and structure the response into more balanced paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, demonstrating basic terms related to manufacturing such as silos, mixer, rollers, and packaging. However, the range is limited and repetitive, with noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'dry through dryers' instead of 'dried' and 'seal' instead of 'sealed'. There are also awkward phrasings like 'marketed for sale by on road supply chain network t'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary limitations restrict the precision of the descriptions. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider range of precise, less common vocabulary and pay closer attention to word formation and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic active or passive constructions. Attempts at complex structures are frequently flawed by grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'the flour was stored... an mixer was used', 'These sheets was cut', and 'noodles discs was cooked'. Errors also appear in articles and plurals, such as 'in first stage'. These frequent errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must practice maintaining grammatical accuracy across a wider variety of complex sentence structures and ensure correct verb-subject agreement.
