Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Overall, there are eight different stages of the process. Starting with the storage silos and ending with the final product of the noodles.

Initially, the flour is put into the storage silos that hold the flour. The water and oil is mixed by the flour in the mixer the thick material is prepared. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response successfully covers the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process, starting from the storage silos and concluding with the final sealed cups. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response is under the 150-word minimum, standing at 142 words. While the overall process is outlined sequentially, some parts of the diagram are under-developed or described with limited detail. For instance, intermediate steps like the transition through rollers and the creation of dough sheets and strips are rushed and lack extension. To reach a higher level, the writer should ensure the word count requirement is satisfied and provide a more thorough, extended description of every key step and mechanical transformation shown in the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement that follows the chronological progression of the manufacturing process from start to finish. The writer uses basic cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to link the stages together, though some of these transitions feel mechanical or repetitive, as seen with the consecutive use of 'Next stage'. Paragraphing is not fully developed, with the entire body of the report lumped into a single block of text alongside the introduction. To improve, the writer needs to organise the information into distinct paragraphs reflecting different phases of the process, and employ a wider, more natural variety of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the details.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to describe the basic actions of the manufacturing process, such as 'storage silos', 'mixer', 'dough sheets', and 'vegetables and spices'. However, the range of lexical items is limited, and there are noticeable word-form and spelling errors that affect precision, such as 'dryed' instead of 'dried' and 'noodles disk' instead of 'noodle discs'. Furthermore, repetitive phrasing like 'thick material' and 'passed through' restricts the flexibility of the writing. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate less common vocabulary with greater accuracy, improve word forms, and pay closer attention to precise terminology and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic active or passive constructions. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'The water and oil is mixed', incorrect prepositional usage such as 'mixed by the flour in the mixer', and missing articles like 'passed through a rollers' and 'to the labelling and sealing'. These errors occasionally cause difficulty or hesitation for the reader. To lift the grammar score, the writer must use a wider variety of complex structures with improved accuracy, paying careful attention to articles, pluralisation, prepositions within grammatical patterns, and verb forms.
