IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram below represnts the manufacturing of instant noodles. It's composed of 8 main steps: First, the flour stored in storage silos is mixed with warm water and oil in the mixer(2), then, the rollers turn the mix into flat dough sheets(3) which after that become spagetti looking dough strips(4). The machine then makes them into noodles discs (5)ready for cooking with hot oil and drying(6). Several vegetables and spices are placed into cups(7). Finally, the process ends by labelling and sealing the cups ready to be sold. (8)
Between mixing and cooking; the dough gets different with each and every step, at first they are dough sheets made by rollers ready to be cut, then sharp knives from the machine cuts them into fine strips ,and then, for the noodles to fit in the cups, they are turned into discs for better placement and usage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, outlining the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process from flour storage to final labelling and sealing. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the minimum 150-word count. Furthermore, while the general sequence is described, some steps are partially under-developed or lack precise detail, such as the exact interaction of rollers and the transition from strips to discs. To reach a higher level, the response needs to extend the explanation of key mechanical phases, ensure all elements of the diagram are fully reported, and meet the word count requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable progression through the stages of the manufacturing process, utilizing sequencing expressions such as 'First', 'then', and 'Finally'. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division between paragraphs could be structured more logically. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is not always completely clear, as seen in the transition between sentences in the second paragraph. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive ties, ensure smoother transitions between the introduction of steps and their detailed descriptions, and organize the text into well-balanced paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing basic terms like 'storage silos', 'mixer', 'hot oil', and 'vegetables and spices'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'represnts' (spelling error) and 'spagetti looking', but these attempts introduce noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and collocation. Words like 'noodles discs' instead of 'noodle discs' also reflect minor lexical inaccuracies. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of precise, task-specific vocabulary and eliminate spelling mistakes and awkward phrasing by using standard academic collocations for describing industrial processes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic complex forms. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the response, including run-on sentences, missing articles (e.g., 'in mixer'), punctuation errors before conjunctions, and awkward clause structures such as 'Between mixing and cooking; the dough gets different with each and every step'. These errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer must practice forming complex sentences accurately, pay closer attention to punctuation rules, and ensure correct use of subject-verb agreement and article placement.
