IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles in the factory, from storage to cutting down into strips and shape, in the end labeling for packaging.
Overall, Instant noodles is manufactured throught a linear process consisting of nine main stages. it begin with storage in the silo and mixed with water and oil, and end with the cooked noodles placed in the cups together with vegetables and spices before being sealed and labelled.
At the first stage, flour is kept in large storage silos. It is then transferred to a mixer, where water and oil are added. After being thoroughly mixed, the dough passes through a series of rollers, which flatten it into thin sheets. These sheets are then cut into strips and shaped into circular noodle discs.
Next, the noodle discs are cooked in oil and dried. Once this process is complete, the dried noodles are placed into individual cups. Vegetables and spices are then added to each cup to improve the flavour. In the final stage, the cups are sealed with lids and labelled, making the instant noodles ready for sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and detailing the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process. The progression is reported accurately from the initial storage of flour in silos to the final labelling and sealing stage. Key features, such as mixing with water and oil, rolling into sheets, cutting into strips and discs, cooking, and adding vegetables and spices, are appropriately covered. While the overview captures the main linear nature of the process well, some stages could be slightly more integrated to reach the highest levels, although the response remains thorough and well-supported throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into paragraphs that follow the chronological sequence of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'At the first stage', 'It is then', 'Next', and 'In the final stage' are used effectively to guide the reader through the diagram. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, overview, and body details into distinct sections. Reference links and transitions are generally smooth, maintaining good clarity across the entire text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to the diagram, such as 'storage silos', 'circular noodle discs', and 'roller conveyor'. However, there are some minor lexical and mechanical slips, such as writing 'throught' instead of 'through', 'it begin' instead of 'it begins', and minor awkwardness in phrasing like 'cutting down into strips and shape'. These occasional word choice and spelling errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over passive voice constructions such as 'flour is kept', 'is then transferred', and 'are added'. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues in the overview ('Instant noodles is manufactured') and minor punctuation or capitalization slips ('it begin'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of the sentences are clear and well-structured, showing a satisfactory level of grammatical accuracy for this level.
