IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram depicts the process of how instant noodles are produced. It is quite evident that after total eight steps instant noodles is manufactured.
It can be seen from the diagram that the first step to produce the instat noodles is to store the flour in the silos. After that add water and oil in it and mix it and third step is to transfer that mixer in the roller to convert it in to dough sheets. And then convert dough sheets into strips and then that strips become the noodles disc

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping at only 92 words. Because of this severe under-length, the description of the manufacturing process is severely incomplete and cuts off before reaching the final stages of the diagram, such as cooking, drying, adding vegetables and spices, and sealing. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. To improve, the writer must ensure they write at least 150 words and cover all key stages of the process from start to finish, providing a clear overview and relevant comparisons where appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organization with sequential connectors like 'After that' and 'And then', but the overall progression lacks strong structural development due to the truncated nature of the response. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with the text compressed into just two short blocks instead of a logical introduction and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes mechanical, such as the repeated use of 'and then'. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to group information logically, use a wider range of cohesive devices without repetition, and structure the response into clear paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, such as 'produce', 'store', 'mix', and 'convert', which severely limits the range. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'instat noodles' (spelling), 'transfer that mixer in the roller' (inaccurate collocation and word choice), and 'noodles disc' (incorrect singular/plural form). To move up to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate a broader range of vocabulary appropriate for describing a manufacturing process, using precise terminology like 'conveyed', 'processed', or 'transformed', while eliminating spelling and word choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and run-on structures joined by coordinating conjunctions like 'and'. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('store the flour in the silos' vs 'store flour'), incorrect verb forms and prepositions ('add water and oil in it'), and run-on sentence construction lacking proper punctuation. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a mix of complex sentence forms with accurate subordinate clauses, improve punctuation, and exercise greater control over basic grammatical patterns and verb agreements.
