IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the purpose of manufacturing insant noodles , from the storage of flour to the final packaging of the finished product.
Overall, there are eight main stages in the production process. The process begins with storing flour in soils and ends with the noodles being placed in the cups ,lablled and sealed .Most of the production takes place trough a series of mechanical process, including mixing ,rolling, cutting, cooking nd drying .
First, flour is stored in a large soil before being transferred to a mixer. At this stage , water and oil are added to flour produce dough. The dough is paased trough the serirs of rollers, which flatten to the sheets .These sheets aew subsequently cutto the narrow strips , which are shaped into circular noodles discs .
Next, the noodles discs are cooked in oil and then dried ,after this dried noodles are placed in indivduals cups . Vegetables and spices are added to each cup to provide flavour. Finally ,the cups are labelled and sealed , making the instant noodles ready for distribution and consumption .
Overall, the production involves a clear linear sequence , with the raw flour gradually being trasferred to packaged instant noodles trough several mechnical and cokking stages .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear and comprehensive overview of the entire instant noodle manufacturing process. The main stages, from the initial storage of flour in silos to the final labelling and sealing of cups, are accurately identified and reported without missing major steps. Key transitions and mechanical processes, such as mixing, rolling, cutting, cooking, and drying, are highlighted effectively. The inclusion of an overview paragraph at both the beginning and the end establishes a clear picture of the linear sequence. To reach a higher band, the response could integrate more detailed direct comparisons or quantitative measurements where available, ensuring every single sub-stage is fully elaborated with precision rather than summarising certain parts more broadly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, guiding the reader smoothly from the beginning of the manufacturing process to the final packaged product. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections for the introduction, main body processes, and concluding summaries. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Next', and 'Finally' are employed effectively to sequence the steps of the diagram. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical due to repetitive transitional phrasing, such as starting multiple paragraphs with similar overarching statements. To move to a higher band, referencing could be made more sophisticated and subtle, ensuring a seamless flow between sentences without relying heavily on basic sequential connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common technical terms related to manufacturing processes, such as 'storage silos', 'mechanical process', 'discs', and 'distribution'. However, the response is marred by a noticeable number of spelling errors (e.g., 'insant' for instant, 'soils' for silos, 'lablled' for labelled, 'trough' for through, 'paased' for passed, 'serirs' for series, 'aew' for are, 'cutto' for cut to, 'indivduals' for individual, 'cokking' for cooking, 'trasferred' for transferred, 'mechnical' for mechanical) and word form issues. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level, as they occasionally distract the reader and demonstrate a lack of careful proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting various subordinate clauses and passive constructions appropriate for a process description (e.g., 'flour is stored in a large silo before being transferred to a mixer'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, such as missing articles ('to flour produce dough', 'flatten to the sheets'), incorrect preposition usage inside grammatical patterns, and minor punctuation issues around commas. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the majority of basic structures are handled adequately. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate tighter control over articles and prepositions.
