IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram represents the manufacturing of instant noodles right from the starting of the procedure to the

packaging level.

Overall, it is clear that the manufacturing process involves 8 different steps from the storage silos to the labelling segment in order to make instant noodles.

To begin with, Flour is stored inside the chamber known as storage silos, where big cylindrical chambers hold all the flour. Moving forward, flour is poured into the mixer along with water and oil. This mixture is transformed into dough sheets and rolled forward for the next process. Then, these dough sheets are cut into strips and forwared to the section which turns these strips into noodle discs.

Then comes the cooking segment, where the noodles are cooked in the presence of oil and instantly dried. Dried up noodles are put into cups with their respective spices and vegetables. The final step involves labelling the cups and sealing the cup in order to prevent it from air or dust to enter the cups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process from the initial storage silos to the final labelling and sealing stage. An overview is successfully provided, noting the total number of steps involved. However, some aspects of the process are somewhat generalized or slightly under-developed; for instance, the intermediate mechanical stages involving rollers and cutting into dough sheets and strips are described in a somewhat basic manner without fully capturing the detailed sequence shown in the diagram. This places the task achievement solidly in the mid-range, meeting the core requirements while leaving room for a more fully elaborated extension of all process features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the beginning of the manufacturing process to the end. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the overview, and the body stages. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, such as 'To begin with', 'Moving forward', and 'Then comes the cooking segment'. However, some of these transitional links feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, and referencing could occasionally be smoother to bridge the steps more naturally, which is characteristic of this level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a technical process, incorporating terms like 'manufacturing process', 'storage silos', 'cylindrical chambers', and 'segment'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by minor spelling or word-choice errors, such as 'forwared' instead of 'forward' and awkward prepositional phrasing like 'prevent it from air or dust to enter'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a vocabulary control that is still developing towards higher precision and natural collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases effectively, such as 'where big cylindrical chambers hold all the flour'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, including article omissions and awkward preposition usage, such as 'right from the starting of the procedure to the packaging level' and 'sealing the cup in order to prevent it from air or dust to enter the cups'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, demonstrating a solid control over basic structures while making mostly successful attempts at complexity.
