IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The illustrated diagram outlines the process by which instant noodles are manufactured. The manufacturing of instant noodles consists of eight stages, commencing with the mixing of flour and water to shaping the dough, cooking and drying. Adding vegetables and spices and finally packing in cups, sealing and labeling.
The process commences at the storage silos, where raw materials are stored. Flour along with water and oil are taken to a mixer where they are mixed in appropriate ratios to form a dough. This lump of dough is passed through rollers to form dough sheets which are cut into strips to make noodle discs. Moving on , these noodle discs are passed through a cooking and drying machine in wheich they are semi-cooked in oil and made easy for consumption.
In addition, spices and vegetables are added to enhance their flavour. Moreover, these noodles are evenly distributed into cups which are labelled with necessary information such as the manufacturing date, expiry date and instructions. These cups are tightly sealed and ready for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the eight main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process, from flour storage to final labeling and sealing. An overview is successfully provided in the opening paragraph. However, some aspects of the process are slightly under-developed or lack full elaboration, such as the exact interaction between the rollers and the formation of dough sheets and strips. The selection of main features is generally appropriate, capturing the progression from raw ingredients to the final packaged product, but tighter extension of the intermediate processing steps would be needed to reach a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the initial storage of raw materials to the final distribution stage. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the introduction, the primary production stages, and the finishing and packing steps. Cohesive devices such as "Moving on", "In addition", and "Moreover" are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, though referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical. The response fully satisfies the requirements of the lower band and demonstrates some characteristics of the higher band through its clear overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as "storage silos", "dough sheets", "noodle discs", and "roller conveyor". There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is accompanied by some minor inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as "wheich" instead of "which" and minor punctuation spacing errors. Nevertheless, the lexical choices are sufficient to communicate the main features of the diagram clearly without impeding the reader's understanding, reflecting a solid performance at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as relative clauses and passive constructions ("are stored", "are added"). There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing commas, run-on fragment structures in the opening paragraph ("Adding vegetables..."), and prepositional slips. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. The majority of sentences remain clear, showing a balanced combination of structures that aligns well with the expected standard.
