IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given illustration depicts the manufacturing process of instant noodles.

Overall, the process occurs in three major steps, first the the storage of flour in storage silos, second the production of noodles and lastly the assembling and packaging to create the final product.

The first step of the production process of instant noddles starts with large quantity of flour being stored in storage silos. This stored flour is put into a large mixer with water and oil to form dough sheets. These sheets are then rolled on a roller and passed through another stage which cuts it into dough strips. The finely sliced strips are turned into noddles disc ready to be cooked and dried. This stage ends the first step of the process and the final step of the manufacturing is initiated.

The last part of the process includes the noddle disc being packed with some vegetabes and spices in a plastic cup which is then sealed and labled and ready for commercial sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process, but it falls short in fully detailing key procedural features. For instance, the transition from dough sheets to strips and then to discs is somewhat blurred, and important intermediate steps such as the addition of water and oil or the specific cooking and drying phase are handled superficially. Furthermore, the overview provided in the second paragraph divides the process into three arbitrary steps rather than capturing a clear summary of the overall linear sequence from raw flour to finished packaged cups. While the general topic is addressed, several parts of the diagram are under-developed or omitted, leaving some mechanical details unexplained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically through paragraphing. The introduction sets out the subject, and subsequent paragraphs follow the chronological flow of the diagram. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the repetitive use of connective transitions and imprecise pronoun references linking the stages. Paragraphing is present and broadly appropriate, but the logical progression between the individual steps of production lacks seamless transitional phrasing, resulting in a somewhat disjointed flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', and 'commercial sale'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by some word-choice and spelling inaccuracies that slightly affect precision, such as 'noddles' instead of 'noodles', 'vegetabes' instead of 'vegetables', and 'labled' instead of 'labelled'. Despite these minor spelling slips and occasional lexical awkwardness, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main steps of the diagram without impeding overall understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'This stored flour is put into a large mixer with water and oil to form dough sheets.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles (e.g., 'first the the storage') and minor subject-verb agreement or singular/plural mismatches (e.g., 'cuts it into dough strips' referring back to plural sheets, and 'noddle disc'). However, these errors are limited in frequency and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning throughout the text.
